Year after year we see proof of goodness as hundreds choose an angel from our tree bringing in thousands of toys. But this year, we noticed something: a shortage of clothes.
"He saw it, something must have clicked in his head," said Adrienne Lytle.
Her husband Stephen spotted our own Lauren Rozyla's post: a plea for help after learning from our receptionist some kids still needed help. Stephen immediately took action. We talked to Adrienne because he is out of town on a work trip.
"On his own he created a post on our neighborhood page and his personal page," said Adrienne.
Within hours the couple's personal friends and members of the South Seminole Heights Civic Association stepped in donating hundreds of dollars. Adrienne and Stephen added $1,100 dollars of their own, and raising almost $1900 hundred dollars to their surprise.
Captain Andy Miller with the Salvation Army says it goes a long way, especially this year as the need is even greater after hurricanes impacted our community.
And while donations have been very generous, they still have wishes to fulfill.
"So we are down to the last 24 hours," said Captain Miller.
Some 200 angels out of 4,000 were not chosen, most of them kids between the ages of 10 and 13. Those children asked for sports items like balls, make up kits and arts and crafts. But time is running out to buy the gifts yourselves.
"If we don't get it by Wednesday we won't be able to get people in need, but people can help us still by donating to the Salvation Army," said Captain Miller.
Miller said to bring the items to the main Tampa office by 4:30 Wednesday. Action News checked with other charities around the Bay and many also suggest to make donations in person to make sure people get necessary items by Christmas.
The captain is optimistic everyone will be taken care of thanks to all the good in people like the Lytle's.
If you would still like to help you can drop off donations until 4:30 tomorrow at the Salvation Army at 1603 N. Florida Avenue in Tampa.
You can also mail your cash donations.
Other charities in the area also suggest to drop off items in person so people in need can get them by Christmas.
